Vitamin D is a fat-soluble compound essential for the body's wellbeing. It has multidirectional effects - helping, among other things, the immune system to function properly and maintaining healthy bones, teeth and muscles. Studies have shown that adequate vitamin D can reduce the risk of infection [1], as well as increase bone mineral density[2], muscle strength and improve neuromuscular coordination [3]. Another important function of vitamin D is to regulate calcium and phosphate metabolism and to participate in the process of cell division - it helps in the proper absorption of calcium and phosphorus and in maintaining normal blood calcium levels. Disturbances in this area can contribute to skeletal deformities and osteoporosis, as well as muscle weakness, resulting in more frequent falls and an increased risk of fractures [4].

Vitamin D is most commonly divided into two compounds: ergocalciferol - or vitamin D2 - and cholecalciferol - or vitamin D3, which is the naturally occurring form of vitamin D. Its main source is exposure to sunlight - which is why it is commonly referred to as the 'sunshine vitamin'. It is thought that up to 50% of the population may be deficient in it [4]. This is related both to modern lifestyles limiting outdoor activities and the difficulty in providing vitamin D from food.

Vitamin D deficiency is common in many groups, but it most affects seniors, people with dark skin, fat malabsorption and the obese. A deficiency of the 'sunshine vitamin' can lead, among other things, to impaired bone mineralisation, which is associated with a general deterioration of the musculoskeletal system. In order to provide the body with adequate amounts of this compound, it is worthwhile to ensure a balanced diet rich in fatty fish (e.g. salmon, mackerel or herring) and to remember about regular exposure of the skin to UVB radiation [4]. It is not uncommon to also need to reach for appropriately selected supplementation.

Vitamin D3 4000 IU is a food supplement containing a stable and bioavailable form of vitamin D3, naturally derived from lanolin (Quali®-D). The product is available as easy-to-swallow soft capsules filled with coconut MCT oil extracted only from the oil produced from the fruit of the coconut palm Cocos nucifera. One capsule contains up to 4,000 IU of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), which corresponds to the recommended daily allowance (2000% RWS).
